The Volcanoes is a National Park in Rwanda in the provinces of North. The park was established on 01.01.1969 and covers an area of 0.16 km². The Volcanoes offers the possibility of self-drive safaris.

The Volcanoes National Park is located in the northwest of Rwanda on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. It is arguably the best place in the world to see the highly endangered mountain gorilla. Other activities in the park include golden monkey trekking, a hike to the former camp of American gorilla researcher Diane Fosseys and the more strenuous Volcanoes Summit.

Landscape

The main habitat of the Volcanoes is the Mountain rainforest.

The dramatic landscape consists of a chain of freestanding mountains connected by tropical montane forests. The gorillas are often found along these forested saddles, in huge bamboo groves.

The climate in Volcanoes is cool, wet. The rainy season takes place from Beginning September to End May The dry season first extended over the months from Beginning June to End September inclusive. The best time to tour is Beginning June Beginning September.

Temperatures do not change much throughout the year. Temperatures are around 16°C during the day and cool down to around 6°C at night. Due to the different altitudes in the park, the climatic conditions also change. The temperature drops by about 6.5°C per 1,000m altitude. There are drier periods from June to August. Waterproof, warm clothing is necessary all year round.
