About Ruaha

The Ruaha is a National Park in Tanzania in the provinces of Morogoro. The park was established on 01.01.1964 and covers an area of 20.22 km². The Ruaha offers the possibility of self-drive safaris.

The park is located about 128 kilometres west of Iringa and is part of the ecosystem that also includes the Rungwa and Usangu Game Reserves. Since an expansion in 2008, the park is larger than the Serengeti National Park, making it one of the largest wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It borders the Njombe River to the north and the Ruaha River to the south. Ruaha is particularly good for observing predators. There are very large prides of lions and the endangered wild dog is also present. Elephants and a variety of antelope species are another major attraction of the park.

Landscape

The main habitat of the Ruaha is the Woodland savannah.

The park's varied vegetation consists of flat savannahs with few trees, dry bushveld, miombo woodlands and swamps. The lifeline of the park is the Great Ruaha River, which attracts many wild animals in the dry season.
