About Bahnhof Hotel Aus

The Bahnhof Hotel was built in 1906 and is situated in the small town of Aus. Renovated into a modern country hotel, it still remains the jewel of the Sperrgebiet. Aus has a rich history that coincides with the discovery of diamonds and the construction of the railway line from Lüderitzbucht to Keetmanshoop. The feral horses of the Namib, the “Ghost town” of Kolmanskuppe, and the historical Diaz Point on the shores of the Atlantic ocean, Ediacaran fossils, bushman paintings are only a few unique attractions on our doorstep. Remains of the POW (prisoners of war) camp can still be seen today followed by many stories of hardship, bravery.

The hotel has 26 immaculate clean rooms, elegantly yet frugally decorated, each with en suite facilities.
The hotel serves a large variety of outstanding cuisine, cakes, and beverages throughout the day.
Day tours to historical sites and the Huib Park reveal some of the most gripping and breathtakingly beautiful landscapes on our planet.

I don't know about the rooms cause we only had lunch on the way. Lunch was great. Vegetarian choice was delicious. Amazing atmosphere.

We had dinner at Bahnhof Hotel last night - 26 August 2025. Our server was Cecile Pofadder. From the moment we walked in the door we were welcomed with a smile. When we asked her what is good to eat, she said everything, and she was correct, everything we had was delicious. She is such a delight and so helpful. Thank you Cecile for the best personal service. You are a gem and an absolute star ⭐

Good service. Good food. It’s a remote area, it was a great surprise to find how good the food is. I stopped there for a great lunch.

If there were an award for most friendly staff, they would get it here. What helpful, passionate and sweet staff work here. Everyone greets you with a smile. Fine rooms in an authentic setting. Restaurant is of a high standard. Very good food. Nice that there is private and guarded parking. Still, some points for improvement: in the last 6 rooms of the corridor, there is no wifi coverage, and hot water is limited. Finally, the current owners want to retire. This hotel is therefore for sale. So if you are interested in a nice adventure, approach the management.

Hotel is located in a small village, Aus, which retains some of its German heritage. It's also relatively close to photographs attractions. The rooms are small, outdated, not air-conditioned and with extremely ineffective heating (this July, the outside night temperatures are in the low 40s F, or single-digit C). The beds are hard, but the hotel provides hot-water bottles and extra blankets. The restaurant has a long menu, the beer selection is great (it has a beer garden), and rhe servuce is prompt. Notice the strictly-enforced 10:00 am checkout (no exceptions), and one pays even for still water bottles. Accross the street is a PUMA gas station (fill up, as there isn't another gas station for miles around), and a small supermarket. Parking is inside a gated parking lot behind the hotel. BTW, the owner is retiring, so the hotel is for sale.

Imagine a quaint historic railway hotel plopped onto the edge of the Namib Desert—built in 1906, lovingly spruced up in 2005, and now serving up freshly baked cakes, hearty a‑la‑carte meals, and generous pours of South African wine in a retro‑rustic setting. With 26 twin rooms, one family room, and even a wheelchair-friendly unit, it's less luxury lodge and more "elegant desert pit stop." Rooms are clean, comfy, and equipped with tea/coffee stations, fans, and mosquito-protection pluggables. By day you can hang on the sundeck, beer garden or historic bar—perhaps spotting those famous feral wild horses at dusk—and at night cozy up in the lounge by the fireplace with a slice of cake that locals say is the best in Namibia. We had dinner in their restaurant and we were pleasantly surprised! Our chicken snitzel served with potatoe spuds & hamburger with chips were well presented and delicious. EXCELLENT service received from our barman/waiter! Keep up the great work!

A must stop place for breakfast or lunch or diner. Top quality service and food. Nice surprise on our way to Luderitz after 3 hours of gravel roads. We did not try the hotel.

We only had dinner at the hotel restaurant, a pleasant restaurant, kind staff, but the food it's a half scam. We ordered the seafood from the ocean “The Calamari Stew”….. Well, there was maybe half a squid on the plate, and four fifths of the contents were, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots in tomato sauce. There was no sign of basmati rice, but instead there was semolina. So, remember if you order the “Calamari Stew” is not a plate from the ocean but a plate from the garden 🤣👎🏻
