Antbear Eco Lodge

Fernhurst Farm Moor Park Road, Estcourt, Estcourt 3310

About Antbear Eco Lodge

What makes our lodge particularly special is that we offer accommodation in a luxury cave. This is an accommodation unit built under a rock. Glass doors open onto a wooden deck with hammock chairs and a spectacular view of the Drakensberg Mountains. This is a luxury eco experience. The cave is cosy and comfortable with features like a Jacuzzi spa bath and a fireplace and even has rock art on its walls.

We also offer a private dining experience where we set up a table on the deck of your cave and you dine by candlelight under the stars.

Antbear Lodge is one of those smaller owner-run establishments with 15 accommodation units as either Mountain View suites or Garden view suites

We also offer pet friendly alternatives

Sustainability and responsible tourism are a huge part of the ethos of our lodge and we subscribe as much as possible to the farm to plate concept. We cook all our meals from scratch and have our own organic vegetable garden. We have our own chickens for eggs, cows for milk and bake our own bread and we even make our own cheese.

Antbear Lodge also offers horse trails ideally suited to beginners. Hot air balloon flights that launch from the lawn in front of the lodge and our newest attraction is our star gazing hammock camp where we tell the Zulu stories of the stars.

The area offers a lot with spectacular hiking trails with dramatic views and waterfalls. And then there is the spectacular bushman rock art where you can see some of the best examples in the world.

This lodge, off the beaten track, has stunning views. The cost includes breakfast and supper and the meals have been superb. Locally sourced ingredients adds to the beauty of it all. But the real treasure is the staff. Nolu and Andile as front office staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and respectful and I could keep going. It's been a pleasure staying here!

Beautiful setting and pretty lodge with lovely woodwork. Management were conspicuous by their absence and therefore attention to detail was poor.. The local staff were very willing though. Definitely overpriced for what you got. Food was a bit up and down.

We booked at Antbear Lodge for our wedding anniversary (we were there in 2019 as well). This was for 7 nights with breakfast and dinner included (21 – 28 Sept 2024). We paid a deposit of R10,045. The total amount was R20,090. A storm broke out in Natal, making the road difficult to navigate. We drove for almost 10 hours and were in constant contact with them as people were getting stuck on the dirt road leading to Antbear. When we arrived late at night, there was no electricity or water. We were only informed about the lack of electricity. The toilets couldn’t flush, etc. There was only one small solar panel outside on the grass. We stayed for 2 nights but couldn’t manage without amenities for that price – they brought us a bucket of water for each of the nights. The waiter informed us that the trucks couldn’t deliver the food supplies, and they had to scrape together what they could in the kitchen. We drove back with parts of the road still covered in black snow. They couldn’t tell us when they would have electricity or water again. We feel they should refund a portion of our deposit. It was a terrible time, and if we are not in practice, we do not get paid, and all our patients were canceled for that time. Additional Information: Antbear Lodge is generally well-regarded on social media for its unique accommodations and beautiful setting in the Drakensberg Mountains. Many guests have praised the friendly staff, the quality of the food, and the unique woodwork throughout the lodge. However, our experience was significantly different due to the lack of basic amenities and the impact of the storm, which severely affected our stay. Despite our attempts to request a partial refund, we were ignored. Unfortunately, we now feel compelled to seek legal advice now.

Only a small dirt road away is this piece of heaven. Came exhausted from a long drive but it's so nice and relaxing. I left completely relaxed, ready for the last stretch of my trip. The view from the cave is stunning the dinner is also great. Great place!

Mountain View’s and a couple hiking trails from the lodge. This in central drakensburg about an hour away from giants cup and some other hiking. The food was amazing!!
