About Antbear Eco Lodge

Antbear Lodge is situated in the Drakensberg region of KwaZulu Natal near to Giants Castle. What makes our lodge particularly special is that we offer accommodation in a luxury cave. This is an accommodation unit built under a rock. Glass doors open onto a wooden deck with hammock chairs and a spectacular view of the Drakensberg Mountains. This is a luxury eco experience. The cave is cozy and comfortable with features like a Jacuzzi spa bath and a fireplace and even has rock art on its walls.

We also offer a private dining experience where we setup a table on the deck of your cave and you dine by candlelight under the stars.

Antbear Lodge is one of those smaller owner run establishments with 15 accommodation units as either Mountain View suites or Garden view suites.

We also offer pet friendly alternatives

Sustainability and responsible tourism are a huge part of the ethos of our lodge and we subscribe as much as possible to the farm to plate concept. We cook all our meals from scratch and have our own organic vegetable garden. We have our own chickens for eggs, cows for milk and bake our own bread and we even make our own cheese.

Antbear Lodge also offers horse trails ideally suited to beginners. Hot air balloon flights that launch from the lawn in front of the lodge and our newest attraction is our star gazing hammock camp where we tell the Zulu stories of the stars.

The area offers a lot with spectacular hiking trails with dramatic views and waterfalls. And then there is the spectacular bushman rock art where you can see some of the best examples in the world.

What a disappointment! Not sure why most of the reviews are just so misleading. We were booked at the “Luxury” Cave for 2 nights but we ended up staying 1 night. Forget about the revamp that the place desperately needs, the issue is just the basics. The room is dusty, old spiderwebs inside the room. The bedding is a no no! Pillows are so stiff. No hand wash in the toilet, no shower gel, no milk for the tea and coffee in the room. After a short shower of rain, we saw water on the floor, not sure whether it was from the roof or underground. We are not even fussy people but there was just no way were going to spend a 2nd night there. Staff is great though and the food is ok.

Words can not describe what you will experience at Antbear Lodge. From the scenic route to the lodge, albeit a dirt road, to the beautifull suroundings, the friendly staff, awesome food and romantic cave lodge. We had a supurb stay and felt refreshed when we left there. A special thanks to Andile and Nolu who treated us like royals. They went the extra mile for us to have this awesome stay. This is one of those truly wonderfull gems in South Africa that you have to visit.

I highly recommend this lodge as a place to disconnect. It is in a beautiful setting and the lodge is truly unique with its carpentry and wood carvings. It is at the end of a bumpy road which adds to the isolation, and there are not many activities at the lodge so you are forced to relax. We stayed in a room with a valley view, which is recommended. I was surprised to find the lodge empty over the 16 December long weekend; perhaps they should revise their pricing?

Having won a weekend away at AntBear, we were delighted to be able to take all 3 of our dogs and stay in a spacious (fenced off) garden suite. We enjoyed some wonderful walks and great food, and were treated to a magical massage as part of the prize!! What a fabulous, relaxing getaway!! Thanks to all for a 5 star experience 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

What a stunning place, you ride a long gravel road and unfortunately there is a shortage of direction boards. Once you over the steel bridge just carry on for 5km and your destination is on the left. Beautiful place in the mountains. Peaceful among the mountains. Andile Ndlemene is so friendly and helpfull. Going an extra mile for the guests. Thank you. We stay in the luxury cave. Really beautiful and you don't need to bring anything only your clothes. They provide coffee, tea milk. Shampoo, conditioner and even a hairdryer. Not self catering. Breakfast and dinner served in your room or in the dining room. Know we going to enjoy it here.

We really loved staying in the 'cave' and the rustic atmosphere of the Lodge. Such beautiful scenery with helpful staff and excellent meals.

The road to this far away place is terrible. They need to add more directional signage u get lost along the way. They don't change the sheets or dust the beds properly. And the bedding smells ugly they should use stay soft to make their bedding to smell nice.
